Egypt outlaws all female circumcision 埃及全面禁止女性割禮
Egypt on Thursday finally banned all female circumcision, the widely-practised
removal of the clitoris which just days ago cost the life of a 12-year-old
girl.
埃及週四終於全面禁止女性割禮，這項常見的割除陰蒂習俗，幾天前才導致一名12歲女童
死亡。
Officially the practice, which affects both Muslim and Christian women in
Egypt and goes back to the time of the pharoahs, was banned in 1997 but
doctors were allowed to operate "in exceptional cases".
這項使埃及境內的女性穆斯林及基督教徒同受影響、可追溯到法老時代的習俗，雖然官方
早在1997年就已明文禁止，但醫生還是獲准在「例外狀況」下進行手術。
Health Minister Hatem al-Gabali decided to ban every doctor and member of the
medical profession, in public or private establishments, from carrying out a
clitoridectomy.
衛生部長喀巴里決定，禁止公私立醫療院所的所有醫生及醫療人員執行陰蒂切開術。
Any circumcision "will be viewed as a violation of the law and all
contraventions will be punished," said a ministry press official, adding that
it was a "permanent ban".
任何（女性）割禮「都會被視為違法，觸法者都會遭懲處，」衛生部新聞官表示，並強調
這是項「永久性禁令」。
A survey in 2000 said the practice was carried out on 97 percent of the
country’s women.
2000年的一項調查顯示，埃及女性有97%接受過割禮。
In the latest fatality, 12-year-old Bedur Ahmed Shaker was taken by her mother
to a private clinic in Minya for the operation. She died before she could be
transferred to hospital.
在最近的那起死亡案例中，12歲大的貝都．埃梅德．夏克被母親帶去明尼雅鎮的私人診所
動手術。但還來不及轉到醫院（急救）前，她就已經死亡。
