However, things changed again. Marlon receives an email with a news clip of Mr. O and the fourth girl. It seems like a beautiful love story, about how Mr. O pursuits #4 and calls her all the time her asking her back. Then there is a picture of them, taken in Mr. O's country after he left Taiwan. The time the picture was taken was the time when Marlon was having Mr. O's baby in the States. Marlon's friends and family are furious. They call the reporter and Mr. O's previous employer. Marlon doesn't know how that can help, and she definitely doesn't want to expose herself and the baby. All she wants is to hear the truth from Mr. O. Marlon calls Mr. O. After trying for three days(50 attempts probably), she finally gets to talk to him. She doesn't mention the news clip in the first call because she wants to have regular conversation, for it may be their last normal conversation. They talk about the baby, Mr. O plans about their future, Mr. O's current situation, and so on. She doesn't know how to react when Mr. O assures her again that he will try to get together with them. The next morning, Marlon call him again. After 3 attempts, the phone is answered. She tells him what she has received and asks him not to lie. Guess what Mr. O's reaction is? "Baby, I'm in a hair salon now and it's my turn to get a haircut. Can you call me back in 20 minutes?" What else can Marlon do? Marlon tries to contact Mr. O after that. It has been 3 days, approximately 40-50 attempts, and no answer. People tell Marlon that Mr. O has given his answer by disappearing. Marlon knows that's probably true. She's now totally confused. She doesn't know what to/not to believe anymore. She used to tell herself that love conquers all, now she thinks that love probably just makes you think that you can conquer all. She questions her own judgement and value. She is not uneducated. She is not mentally ill. Then how can this person, the person who she thinks is the one and devoted herself to, turns out to be someone totally different? She used to think that as long as she tells the baby that "your daddy and mommy love each other very much so we have you," the baby would understand. But now she can't say that to the baby anymore. She can't lie to her baby, telling her something that she doesn't even believe. People conclude that Mr. O has never been serious to Marlon. It's hard to believe, either. Marlon can accept that Mr. O just wanted to have sex with her and have fun, but nobody plays with someone else to the degree of agreeing to have a baby! There's nothing Marlon can do now. Nothing has changed, she told herself. It's not a big deal. She should be able to distract herself from this bullshit and focus on her baby and school. Everything's still the same. Mr. O doesn't call, just like before. When Marlon can't hold herself and dial the number, it still drops as usual. Nothing has changed, except the cancerous tumor of her has started to peel off with her decision to cut off its nutrient supply. Very slowly, but so painfully that she doubt if it will ever heal. She's looking forward to the day when she can proudly show the scar to the people who care about her with a smile on her face.
